Zinc borate is used mainly in fire-retardant formulations for plastics (PVC resin, Vinyl resin and other resins compatible to DOP), rubbers, textiles, paper and paints. Zinc borate is also used as an additive in glass and ceramic products and as a catalyst in the chemical industry.

Halogens - bromine compounds, fluoric compounds, chlorine compound - are needed in combination with Zinc borate to achieve the effect as a flame ratardant additive.

Moreover, zinc borate and antimony trioxide is applied to avoid yellow coloring of car headlights.
